As sock specialists, we are best known for our innovative Softop®, (patented in 1989) health, diabetic and walking socks, designed with practicality, functionality, and everyday comfort in mind.
Ever since ‘Honest John’ Hall built his first factory employing just 16 people, in the rural farming community of Stoke Golding, Leicestershire in 1882, HJ Hall has been synonymous with quality, durability, and integrity.
John Hall’s original goal was simple but sincere: to create warm, long-lasting socks for the hardworking farming community in which he was raised. The first socks he produced were grey half-hose made from pure Scottish wool (recoded in 1892 costing 2s 7d for 2 dozen pairs) which set the tone for what would become over 140 years of sock-making expertise.
His reputation for honesty and strong values earned him the name ‘Honest John’, and the initials HJ have remained a mark of trust ever since.

The brainchild of Peter Hall 'Indestuctibles' were born in 1958. These have become renowned as truly resilient and durable. Indestructible™ socks are made from heavy duty nylon, they are unshrinkable and underwritten by a guarantee of wear. This guarantee has gradually been extended over the years and now stands at 12 months, while every other pair of HJ Hall socks carries a 6 month guarantee.
Our Softop® range, which includes Softop®, Comfort-Top, Diabetic and walking socks, are the only socks endorsed by the Institute of Podiatrists - a testament to their technical performance and foot health benefits.
We are proud to be the only sock brand with IOP endorsement, first earned in 2011, acknowledging HJ Hall’s established reputation for improving the lives of those with poor foot health.
The IOP is an official board, supporting and training practitioners in the industry and has been a long-term supporter of HJ Hall’s well known Softop ®, diabetic, walking and health range. HJ’S Softop ® socks remain our best-selling style, loved by generations of customers.
